45 of the Week: The Coolin' System- The Prophet b/w Dracula

Here's the thing about Nashville:  No one is in just one band.  Ask anyone in a band that has made it out of Nashville and they will tell you just how many bands they where in before they broke with the current one, and just how many bands they are still in! (Session players don't count)  There could be many reasons for the multiple band rotation: Different styles, more gigs (equals more money), a better chance at making it.  But then there are the players who just want to play

.

Which brings us to today's players, the Coolin' System.  Every single player in this band is in another one, including such illustrious bands as Space Capone and the Dynamites, with trumpet player Mikie Martel racking up the most projects out of everyone (the count is up to 3 or 4 at this point,  Care to verify that Mikie?).

That said, this is a band that resembles the old Jazz combos, where everyone was just out to play.  Thus far, all of the bands releases have been covers, with the up coming LP only featuring one or two originals, and this is not to the deterrent of the band.  It allows them to just focus on the recording and playing, not worrying about arrangements or songwriting.  It just lets them play.

And that is quite evident on today's piece of Wax.  Both tunes are relatively obscure tunes, that just fit the band so well, they more or less make them their own.  "The Prophet" is a nice upbeat piece of Jazz soul from a former James Brown band member, almost Meters-like in its tasty groove, while "Dracula" is a laid-back effort  that lets the band just hang out on the groove.

With an album just around the corner (coming out on GED Soul), it looks like these guys will be playing here for a while still, letting out some great jazz and soul upon anyone who will listen.
